Terms of use
This site is information, not legal advice. It answers for England, Wales and Scotland; the court-tier figures are a guideline range a court may depart from; and nothing here is a prediction of what any court will do in any case.
Information, not legal advice
What this site is
A free, independent reference. It carries no advertising, sells nothing, takes no payments and asks for no identifiers. Using it creates no relationship between you and the publisher.
Where it applies
This site answers for England and Wales and for Scotland. It does not answer for Northern Ireland, which runs a separate regime that is not among its sources. Figures on this site are Great Britain figures, not UK-wide ones.
What the court-tier figures are
The court figures on this site are a guideline range a court may depart from — they are the Sentencing Council’s own starting points and ranges, not a tariff and not a prediction. A court decides on the day, on facts this site knows nothing about.
The out-of-court figures are different in kind: those are fixed amounts set by order, and they are stated as such.
Accuracy, and its limits
Every figure here is traceable to the source named beneath it, and the source’s class — legislation or sentencing guideline — is marked. Law changes, and a page that was right when it was written can go out of date. If you find something wrong, please say so; corrections are genuinely welcome.
Every figure here has been taken from a named primary source, cited, and reconciled against that source. What has not happened is the last step: this site’s own sign-off sheet is not complete, so none of the figures has been signed off by the reviewer of record. That is stated in the notice on every page rather than hidden, and it is a statement about the figures — the explanatory text is finished.
Liability
This site is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, the publisher is not liable for a decision you take on the basis of it. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Governing law
These terms — the agreement between you and this website — are governed by the law of England and Wales, and were last reviewed on 3 August 2026.
That choice of law governs these terms only. It does not narrow what this site covers: the road traffic law described elsewhere on the site applies in England, Wales and Scotland, and the pages state the Scottish position wherever it differs — the prescribed alcohol limits and the conditional-offer procedure in particular. Northern Ireland runs a separate regime and is out of scope, which the relevant pages say where it matters.
Where this applies. This site answers for England and Wales and for Scotland. It does not answer for Northern Ireland: the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 does not extend there (s.99(7)), and Northern Ireland runs a separate Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order regime that is not among this site’s sources. Figures here are Great Britain figures, not UK-wide ones.
