Road signs and what the law says they mean

Each row below gives a sign’s diagram number and the description the instrument itself uses. The wording is quoted, not rewritten, which occasionally makes it read oddly — and where it does, this page says why rather than smoothing it over.

What this catalogue is

The instrument's own wording, quoted rather than rewritten.

Below are 291 signs, read from five of the instrument’s schedules. Each row gives the diagram number the instrument assigns and the description it uses. The descriptions are quoted, not paraphrased: rewriting them would be authoring law rather than reporting it.

Scope

This is deliberately not the complete set of road signs

The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 (S.I. 2016/362) has nineteen schedules. The five here are the ones a question about what a sign means actually reaches — hazard warnings, regulatory signs for moving traffic, regulatory signs at junctions, speed limits, and information and advisory signs. The remaining fourteen cover parking and red-route controls, road markings, directional signs, matrix and variable-message signs, light signals and the character set. Claiming completeness over five of nineteen is the kind of claim a reader cannot check.

Two things to expect

No pictures, and two oddly-worded entries

No sign images are reproduced. The instrument holds each sign’s appearance as an image rather than as text, so there is nothing to quote and nothing is invented in its place.

The two most-looked-up signs also read strangely, and the reason is in the drafting. The STOP sign (diagram 601.1) and the GIVE WAY sign (diagram 602) are described in the sign table only by cross-reference to Part 7 of the schedule, rather than by a plain meaning. Their rows below say what the instrument says.
