Driving test and licence fees

These are the fees the State charges, each one read from the instrument that sets it. No driving-school prices appear anywhere on this page, because a school’s price is not law.

Normal hours and out of hours

A practical test costs more outside normal hours, and “normal hours” is defined in the Regulations rather than left to the test centre: for a car test it means an appointment between 07:30 and 16:30 on a working day. A working day is any day other than a Saturday, Sunday, bank holiday, Christmas Day or Good Friday — so an evening, a weekend or a bank holiday appointment carries the higher fee.

One case runs the other way. Where the Secretary of State cancels a normal-hours appointment and it cannot reasonably be rearranged within normal hours, the normal-hours fee is what is payable even though the test runs outside them.

Two things that cost nothing, and one this site will not price

The first full licence carries no fee

There is no row above for issuing the full licence after a pass, and that is a finding rather than an omission. The fee schedule charges for a licence granted in exchange for a subsisting one, but expressly excludes a licence granted to reflect additional driving entitlement not shown on the licence submitted in exchange — which is exactly what the full licence issued on passing is.

No driving-school prices appear anywhere on this site

Lesson rates are not law. They vary by provider and by city, no instrument sets them, and a school’s advertised price rendered beside a statutory fee in the same table would borrow an authority it does not have. This page carries the fees the State charges and nothing else.
